OPEN WATER
SCUBA TRAINING - Part 1
Scheduling:
Part 1 of the Open Water Certification can be completed in
as little as 4 days. Tuesdays and Thursdays or Mondays
and Wednesdays. Classes typically meet from 7pm to 10pm
in our dive shop.Occasionally we offer weekend classes
on Saturday and Sunday. Check our class schedule on the main
page and send us an email or
better yet, call us at 919-851-6662 with
any questions or to sign up for an upcoming class.
What to expect:
One needs only be able to swim 200 yards or snorkel 300 yards,
and stay in water to deep to stand for 10 minutes by floating
and/or treading water. The most important part of the course
is training and spending time underwater in the pool. Such
skills as clearing water from your mask, sharing air with
a buddy, and controlling buoyancy prepare you to be weightless,
have fun and be safe underwater.
It is necessary to complete written exercises at home and
in class. Each
student will be responsible for a Student Kit (study
material) which will be necessary for home study. See store
for options.
What you will need:
We furnish scuba gear systems. (Tanks, Regulators, BCD *Buoyancy
Control Device*). To encourage
you to go ahead and get your personal snorkeling equipment,
we will give you 15% off our regular price if you purchase
it before the class begins. Our expert staff will assist
you with selection, and exchanges are welcome during the
class should something be unsuitable. If you wish us to furnish
snorkelling equipment for the pool training, add $20 to the
cost of part 1.
OPEN WATER
SCUBA TRAINING - Part 2
Once you have satisfactorily completed confined
water training (Part 1) in the pool, etc., and
passed the PADI Final Exam,
you are ready to do 4 open water training dives, and receive
your Open Water Certification.
These training dives must be made over two separate
days. No more than 3 training dives per day. These
dives are mainly for experience, but many of the
same skills learned in the pool will be reviewed.
In winter travel to warmer water is necessary. Possibly a
long weekend diving one of the crystal
clear springs in N. Florida. May through October we dive
locally. Mostly we will use the facilities at Fantasy
Lake Scuba Park and/or Lake
Rawlings. As admission to the various facilities and
travel costs, may vary we do not collect them in advance.
Each participant will be responsible for these expenses.
(currently $15 at Fantasy Lake and $18 at Rawlings)
Equipment
Reef & Ridge will furnish scuba equipment
and wetsuits for the Open Water training. Snorkeling
equipment is the responsibility of the students.
If not owned, rentals are available for $20.00.
You should purchase your own snorkeling equipment.
Reef & ridge will give you a 10 % discount if
you purchase snorkeling equipment from us to use
during your open water training. This is also a
good time to consider getting a Wetsuit. To have
fun in the water being warm and comfortable is most
important. We will give you a 15% discount if you
buy a suit from us and use it during your open water
training. (3 mm wetsuits start at about $119, less
the 15% credit)
